April and May brought plenty of rain, before another dry start to the summer. The first two weeks of August were particularly hot, allowing the grapes to be harvested as early as 20 September. The resulting wines are powerful, full-bodied and intense in colour, with particularly seductive aromas. The transition to the 21st century marks the start of an exceptional period for the quality of Port wines, particularly those from the Douro Valley.
Oenology
After the harvest, these wines are selected by the estate's panel of tasters, then matured in oak tuns for two winters. They are then tasted again the following spring. If their quality proves exceptional, they are retained for the final blend.
Suggestions for accompaniment
To be drunk after a few years of ageing with a jugged hare, a stilton, a dark chocolate dessert or to accompany a cigar.
