Schist, exposure and the influence of the Loire

Located on the right bank of the Loire, Savennières rests on a base of schist, punctuated with quartz and wind-blown sand. These poor, well-drained soils promote slow, concentrated ripening. The hillsides, often facing south and south-west, enjoy generous sunshine while benefiting from the coolness brought by the river. This combination of warmth, minerality and ventilation produces some of the most unique dry wines in the Loire.

The history of Chenin Blanc

Originating in Anjou and cultivated since the 6th century, Chenin Blanc is thought to have been selected from Pineau d'Aunis or Chenin Noir, and owes its name to Mont Chenin in Touraine, although others believe its origin is linked to the word ‘chien’ (dog). A fertile grape variety that is strongly influenced by its terroir, it requires careful cultivation to express its finesse. It thrives on poor, well-drained soils, where the mild Anjou climate and botrytis pave the way for great wines, particularly sweet wines.

Aromatic profiles & tension

A typical Savennières combines freshness, intensity and depth. The aromas can evoke pear, quince, citrus fruits, flowers or spices depending on the vintage and ageing. On the palate, the straightforward and energetic structure, supported by a mineral tension, is one of the most sought-after characteristics of the wine. The long and vibrant finish highlights the complexity of Chenin on schist.

Vintages, ageing and food pairings

Cool vintages reinforce the verticality and mineral expression, while warmer years bring more volume and roundness. The wine can be kept for ten to twenty years, sometimes much longer for the most ambitious cuvées. At the table, Savennières accompanies noble fish, mature cheeses, roast poultry or delicately spiced dishes. The diversity of producers offers a multitude of interpretations of this exceptional Loire terroir.
