Savennières, Les Genêts, Damien Laureau - 2020

This is the queen appellation, the one that is renowned for its exceptional chenin de garde! And we are more than ever in admiration of the production of Damien Laureau, a great talent at the service of his terroirs. His Genêts impresses by its freshness, its aromatic clarity (bitter orange, spices), its elegance and its finesse. An accessible wine, but capable of ageing gracefully. Guide Vert RVF: 91/100

Damien Laureau took over a vineyard and fruit growing estate in Gemmes sur Loire in 1999. In 2006, he took over a few plots in the Savennières vineyard and his estate now has a surface area of 7.8 ha. In organic farming since 2009, he cultivates his vines without synthetic products and with preparations based on dung or composts. The soils are predominantly sandy-silt for this wine.

The Chenin grapes, harvested in successive batches, are pressed directly, settled for 12 hours, and fermented (indigenous yeasts) in vats or barrels depending on the terroir. Each micro-terroir is identified and vinified separately. Malolactic fermentation is carried out by itself according to the vintage. Aged for 12 months in barrels and then a minimum of 6 months in vats.

But there is also a generation of young, ambitious and hyper-talented winemakers, who have developed a new aesthetic of wines, which has since been celebrated by the world's critics and has received top marks in the guides. Like his colleague and friend Richard Leroy, who had experienced more or less the same adventure a few years earlier, Damien Laureau decided to take over a winegrowing and arboricultural estate in Sainte-Gemmes-Loire in 1999 after having worked for two years in a Parisian company. The adventure lasted until the autumn of 2006, when the fruit growing was abandoned, as well as part of the vineyard, in AOC Anjou. Damien then refocused on the vineyards of Savennières and the mythical Roche-aux-Moines. Today, the estate has about 8.5 hectares and started its organic conversion in 2009. It was certified with the 2012 vintage. Cultivating the vines without synthetic products allows to maintain the life in the soil at its optimum in order to obtain the truest possible expression of the...
