The fourth largest wine-producing canton in German-speaking Switzerland, the Aargau vineyards were already known in Roman times. Located on the same latitude as Burgundy, Aargau is notably the source of pinot noirs that can be remarkably deep. Blauburgunder occupies more than half of the vineyard area (390 ha) and grows on limestone soils with a clay texture. Among the white varieties, Riesling-Sylvaner continues to be popular and is increasingly competing with Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Kerner. The vines grow in the main and secondary valleys of the Reuss, Limmat, Aare and Rhine, on the sunny southern slopes or on the shores of the isolated lake of Hallwil.
