Viticulture
Jean-François Malsert is a winemaker with a head for heights. He founded Domaine de l’Iserand in the hills of the Ardèche, at an altitude of over 350 metres, near Tournon, north of the Rhône Valley, in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Before devoting himself fully to viticulture, Jean-François first opened a wine bar in Tournon. Then a desire to see the world took him to New Zealand and Australia. These experiences shaped his approach to wine before he returned to his homeland to devote himself entirely to his estate.
Oenology
The winemaking process is deliberately minimalist. The reds are usually made from whole bunches, with relatively short vatting periods of one to two weeks. The wines are then aged in amphorae and demi-muids for periods ranging from six to eighteen months. Jean-François is particularly fond of these high-altitude hillside terroirs, which enable him to produce Saint-Josephs with a light and airy profile.
