St-Joseph Rodéo, Cave de l'Iserand - 2024

  • Provenance: Northern Côtes du Rhône
  • Appellation: St-Joseph
  • Domain: Cave de l'Iserand
  • Grape variety(ies): Marsanne et Roussanne
  • Alcohol degree: 13.2%
This 2024 ‘Rodéo’ white Saint-Joseph is made from Roussanne grapes grown on granite terraces, typical of this part of the appellation. A brief skin contact, followed by ageing in amphorae, lends it texture and aromatic depth whilst preserving the wine’s vitality. The nose opens with notes of white-fleshed fruit and delicate flowers, carried by a very pure expression of the terroir. On the palate, the wine remains slender, animated by a great mineral tension that structures the whole and prolongs the finish with precision. A racy and luminous white!

Viticulture

Jean-François Malsert is a winemaker with a head for heights. He founded Domaine de l’Iserand in the hills of the Ardèche, at an altitude of over 350 metres, near Tournon, north of the Rhône Valley, in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Before devoting himself fully to viticulture, Jean-François first opened a wine bar in Tournon. Then a desire to see the world took him to New Zealand and Australia. These experiences shaped his approach to wine before he returned to his homeland to devote himself entirely to his estate.

Oenology

The terroirs are predominantly hillsides composed of granite, gneiss, mica schist and loess. Half of the vineyards are worked using animal traction, winches and pickaxes, and the other half with a small tractor. The whites, vinified exclusively in amphorae, are not aged in wood in order to preserve their natural tension. The philosophy remains minimalist: no fining, no filtration, just a small dose of sulphur at bottling.
