La Grande Pièce, Château de Plaisance - 2023

La Grande Pièce 2023 comes from a confidential 0.8 hectare parcel of vines over 50 years old, rooted in sandstone and poudingues soils. It is a wine of great depth and balance. The nose seduces with aromas of ripe fruit (quince, mirabelle plum), dried flowers and a hint of toast. The palate is full-bodied, with good density and a mineral tension that stretches out the finish. A well-structured, vibrant Chenin that is both gastronomic and well-suited to ageing.

Viticulture

Château de Plaisance uses Guillot-Poussard pruning to maintain the circulation of sap, control the load and avoid overcrowding. They carefully manage disbudding and leaf thinning according to need. As far as the soil is concerned, they keep tillage between the rows to a minimum to encourage biodiversity, and use grass cover and natural mulching to protect the soil. Soil: sandstone and pebbled.

Oenology

Hand-picked in crates. Slow cold pressing, indigenous yeasts. Vinified and matured in stoneware barrels and jars for 15 months. Partial malolactic fermentation.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Roast turbot, citrus beurre blanc - Crispy sweetbreads, saffron jus - Matured Selles-sur-Cher cheese

Château de Plaisance, superbly taken over by Vanessa Cherruau since the 2019 harvest, is located in Rochefort-sur-Loire. This estate had everything to seduce her: 25 hectares of vines cultivated organically since 1995 and biodynamically since 2008. Mostly planted with Chenin (80%), the vines extend over prestigious terroirs: the Butte de Chaume (Premier Cru des Coteaux du Layon), the Grand Cru Quarts-de-Chaume on the left bank of the Loire and the AOP Savennières on the right bank. Since taking over, Vanessa has stopped all ploughing, replanted hedges, fruit trees and forest trees to promote biodiversity, and manages each plot with remarkable precision. Each dry wine cuvée is vinified separately to best express its terroir. The price/pleasure ratio is splendid and the estate's potential seems simply unlimited to us. A real must-have.
