Argovie

  • Image Argovie no.0
The fourth largest wine-producing canton in German-speaking Switzerland, the Aargau vineyards were already known in Roman times. Situated on the same latitude as Burgundy, Aargau is notably the source of pinot noirs which can be remarkably deep. Blauburgunder occupies more than half of the vineyard area (390 ha) and grows on clay-textured limestone soils. Among the white varieties, Riesling-Sylvaner continues to be popular and is increasingly competing with Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Kerner. The vines grow in the main and secondary valleys of the Reuss, Limmat, Aare and Rhine, on the sunny southern slopes or on the shores of the isolated Lake Hallwil.
