An exceptional Swiss vineyard nestled between lakes, limestone soils and aromatic finesse
The Lake Biel wine region, also known as Bielersee, is one of the oldest vineyards in Switzerland. Located in the Bernese Seeland, between the towns of Biel, La Neuveville and the island of Saint-Pierre, it boasts a winemaking tradition firmly rooted since the Middle Ages. Local winegrowers carry on a craft passed down through the generations, cultivating vines often managed as family estates or weinguts.
Lake Biel plays a key role in the vineyard’s climatic balance. It acts as a thermal regulator, limiting extremes and promoting uniform ripening of the grape varieties. The limestone and marl soils, combined with the hillsides’ ideal exposure, give the wines great freshness and a pronounced minerality, the hallmark of this wine-growing region.
Pinot Noir dominates the vineyards. Here, this Pinot expresses itself with elegance, producing fine red wines, sometimes vinified as Œil-de-Perdrix, the famous local rosé. The white wines are mainly based on Chasselas, also known as Gleresse, but Chardonnay, Sauvignon and, more rarely, Cerlier are also found. All wines bear the Lake Biel AOC designation.
Lake Biel wines are distinguished by their balance and precision. The Pinot Noirs offer notes of red fruit, lovely tension and good ageing potential depending on the vintage. The whites, dominated by Gleresse, emphasise freshness, finesse and the expression of the terroir, with prices often justified by their rarity and quality.
The Swiss winegrowers of Lake Biel are recognised as among the best in the country for their high quality standards. Many wineries have won national and international awards, showcasing local specialities from micro-plots. Sustainable viticulture and respect for the vines are at the heart of their practices.
Tasting is an integral part of the experience. Many wine-growing estates open their doors during wine festivals, notably in La Neuveville or on Île Saint-Pierre. Visitors can easily access the estates and enjoy a unique setting between lakes and hillsides.
With a limited area, the Lake Biel vineyards produce rare wines, sought after for their identity and authenticity. Each bottle reflects a specific terroir of the Seeland, far removed from standardised production.
To discover these Swiss wines, buying directly from the winemaker is still the best option, though some estates also offer their vintages online. Whether you’re looking for a white, red or rosé, Lake Biel offers the perfect variety to accompany local cuisine and moments of sharing.
