Vin de France, Red is hot, Baudon - 2022

What struck us most when we tasted this cuvée, which claims to be ‘thirst-quenching’, was that its form was even more serious than its initial claim: dark in colour, the wine is astonishingly dense and mature, while preserving its balance. And it offers a precision of flavour and tannin that is astonishing for a sulphur-free wine. Remarkable!

Viticulture

A wine for the trade made from purchased grapes. The wine comes from a 25-year-old Merlot vineyard on a clay plateau in the Massugas commune.

Oenology

The harvest date is decided by tasting the grapes. Gentle vinification, with extraction by punching down in the middle of fermentation. Malolactic fermentation in concrete vats, and ageing for two months in the same containers. Inerted, sulphur-free bottling in an original bottle representing the winemakers who have shaped this wine. 3,500 bottles produced.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Vegetable couscous • Farmhouse pork croquettes with Thai herbs.

By now you're familiar with this 'coup de coeur' domaine, which we had the pleasure of discovering last year during the week of the Primeurs. Since then, we've visited them and imported their first wines, which are the three cuvées we're offering you today. The Vin de France Red is hot is a sulphur-free wine without reproach, breaking with the codes of Bordeaux with its Burgundian-shaped bottle and screw cap. It surprised us with its fullness and precision, which are rare for natural wines. As for the Montagne Saint-Emilion, Terres blanches expresses the finesse, tension and freshness of the predominantly chalky soils, while Terre brunes expresses the smoothness of the clay, with an extra touch of youthful deliciousness. An estate that will be talked about in Bordeaux...
