Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, Sandrone - 2021

From one of Barolo's legendary winemakers and one of only two "Grand Crus" in the Roero, this Valmaggiore has a superb nose of exotic fruit, citrus, flowers, noble vegetal and white pepper. It is a great, fine wine, with sapid tannins, expressing itself delicately and ending with a very pure finish that makes you salivate. An artist's wine, which has enough to make many Barbarescos tremble, a great favourite! Wine Enthusiast : 92/100 ; James Suckling : 91/100 ; Vinous : 94/100 ; Falstaff : 93/100

Viticulture

The vineyards are located in the heart of the Roero, in the municipality of Vezza d'Alba and more specifically on the Valmaggiore (grand) cru. The vineyard has a south and south-west exposure, with sandy soil and a steep slope. The density of plantation is high (8'000 vines/ha) and the load per vine is reduced to 800 gr.

Oenology

Each batch is vinified separately. After de-stemming and light crushing, maceration begins. The alcoholic fermentation starts about 24 to 36 hours later thanks to the indigenous yeasts. Maceration is carried out in open stainless steel tanks for the first few days of alcoholic fermentation. In total, the fermentation lasts about 20 days. Malolactic fermentation is carried out immediately after alcoholic fermentation in 500 l French oak demi-muids. Aged for 12 months in the same barrels and then 9-10 months in bottles.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Brezzaola on a bed of rocket - Vinaigrette of veal loin cooked with string.

Luciano Sandrone is a Barolo star. He owes his recognition to an unparalleled sense of wine, which leads him to pay attention to all the details that make a great Barolo. In 1978, Luciano Sandrone isolated his Cannubi Boschis (a 7 hectare vineyard formerly known as Monghisolfo and located in the north-eastern extension of Cannubi) for the first time. Five years later, this wine was consecrated and entered the empyrean of mythical vintages with a 100/100 from Robert Parker. It then became a cult wine and enjoyed uninterrupted worldwide success. The only change in recent years is that it has been renamed Aleste since the 2013 vintage, thus merging the first names of Barbara's two children and therefore Luciano's grandchildren, ALEssia and STEfano.Back in 1990, he released the first vintage of his Barolo Le Vigne. The latter is not another vintage, but refers to the local tradition of blending different terroirs to produce the best possible wine. It will take some time to establish this wine in terms of image, especially as the first four vintages were sold only in the USA. So it only started to be known here in 1995. In the last few vintages, it has become the new spearhead of the estate, joining the pantheon of the appellation and benefiting from the entry into the blend of major crus: Cerretta and...
