IGT Umbria, Maestà Quattro Chiavi, Bellafonte - 2019

This is Peter Heilbron's latest creation, a cuvée celebrating the glory of Sangiovese, with a little Sagrantino thrown in for good measure. Whole harvest vinification brings out the finesse of the grape variety. The nose reveals notes of morello cherry and bitter orange, as well as tobacco and white pepper. On the palate, freshness and softness accompany a subtle, silky tannic structure. While it's best enjoyed young, decanted into a carafe, it will also benefit from ageing!

Viticulture

The Bellafonte Estate is located in the heart of the most primitive part of Umbria, a stone's throw from Bevagna, near the village of Torre del Colle. The vines are on average 15 years old. Guyot and cordon de Royat cultivation. Planting density: 5,000/ha. Clay soil alternating with marl and arenaceous formations.

Oenology

The estate uses whole grapes with a small proportion of whole bunches. After months of natural decanting in stainless steel, the wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels, where it rests for 36 months. A minimum of 10 months maturing in bottle.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Lamb tajine • Duck aiguillettes, bigarade sauce • Lentil soup with smoked tofu.

Domain
Tenuta Bellafonte is located in the heart of the primitive part of the region, a stone's throw from the towns of Bevagna and Assisi. It was founded in the mid-2000s by Peter Heilbron, an international executive with a passion for great wines, who decided to convert to a new career, taking his friend the late Gianfranco Soldera of the legendary Case Basse as his model. He fell in love with this terroir and decided to try to tame the Sagrantino grape variety, which is very generous in colour, tannins and alcohol, in order to create a great red wine that is refined and capable of aging gracefully. But his talent does not stop there, as he now produces a range of wines that shines with its accuracy and its fidelity to the local terroir, full of character.
