Umbria

Wines of Umbria

Discover authentic wines from the heart of Italy

Located in central Italy, Umbria is a wine-producing region renowned for the depth and diversity of its wines. Long overshadowed by neighbouring Tuscany, it now captivates with characterful wines, expert production and reasonable prices.

Umbrian wines and their styles

Red, white and rosé wines from Umbria

Red wines dominate Umbrian production. The most iconic remains the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG, a powerful, well-structured wine with intense aromas of dark fruit and spices. The more accessible reds, often made from Sangiovese, offer lovely freshness and a balanced structure.
White wines also play an important role, particularly around Orvieto, with delicate and aromatic wines. Umbrian whites charm with their crisp palate and floral notes.

Umbria’s iconic grape varieties

Sagrantino is the king of Umbrian grape varieties, grown around Montefalco. It is grown alongside Sangiovese, as well as international varieties such as Cabernet and Pinot in certain IGT wines.
As for whites, Grechetto, Trebbiano and, occasionally, Sauvignon dominate, producing elegant white wines closely linked to the region’s limestone and clay soils.

Producers and wine estates in Umbria

Renowned estates and local expertise

Umbria is home to several leading estates, such as Lungarotti in Torgiano, or historic properties associated with big names like Antinori. At CAVE, we particularly recommend Tenute Bellafonte, established in 2000, which crafts fresh and elegant wines.

Tasting Umbrian wines

Tasting tips and food and wine pairings

A Sagrantino is the ideal accompaniment to roasted meats, slow-cooked dishes or mature cheeses, thanks to its tannic structure. The more supple Sangiovese-based reds pair well with everyday Italian cuisine.
Orvieto DOC white wines, made from Grechetto and Trebbiano, are perfect with fish, vegetables and antipasti.
