Cyclades, Clos Stegasta rouge RARE, T-Oinos - 2021

This grand cuvée from the wonderful Mavrotragano grape has a deep red colour and reveals intense aromas of dark berries, undergrowth, pepper, spices and cherries. On the palate, it is rich, complex and dynamic, with a full body and refined, precise tannins. The lingering finish testifies to its excellent ageing potential. Structured yet elegant, this wine is already magnificent and will continue to gain in complexity with a further three or four years of cellaring. James Suckling : 94/100

Viticulture

T-Oinos is the first wine to be produced in 3000 years on this land of the volcanic island of Tinos, a world heritage island in the Cyclades. Alexander Avatangelos, a philosopher and theologian by training, has a 10-hectare vineyard located in the central-eastern part of the island at an altitude of 400 metres. In order to preserve the beauty of the place, the vineyard is cultivated organically. The soil is sandy on a bed of granite.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Veal tendrons with tarragon - Moussaka - Duck breast with honey and sherry vinegar.

Liquid geography

Domain
Located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Tinos is one of the jewels of the Cyclades. Alexander Avatangelos, a philosopher and theologian, once had a crazy dream: to replant vines in the northern part of the island, on a mountainous plateau that looks like a fractal field! So he embarked on the adventure, planting a dozen hectares of vines at very high density. With the support of Gérard Margeon, head sommelier of Alain Ducasse's restaurants and Stéphane Derenoncourt since 2016, he produces a range of wines with exceptional character. The vineyard is divided into three different areas, at an average altitude of 440 to 480 m. The first - where the white Clos Stegasta is located - is on the plateau, littered with huge blocks of granite. The second area is called "Les Terrasses" (3.5 ha) and is located a few kilometres down in a small valley that slopes towards the Bay of Livada: this is where the great red Clos Stegasta is produced. The third area is on a hill not far from the winery. Here 10,000 vines are planted to produce the red T-Oinos and the Mavrosé.
