Campania

Wines of Campania

The different types of Campania wines

Campania’s red wines are primarily based on Aglianico, the iconic grape variety that produces the famous Taurasi DOCG, often available as a Riserva or as a vintage wine. Structured and deep, these red wines show excellent ageing potential.
The white wines charm with their freshness and distinct aromas, with wines made from Greco, Fiano, Falanghina or local Bianco, often classified as DOC or DOCG.

Grape varieties and regional specialities

Among the flagship grape varieties are Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Falanghina from the Campi Flegrei and Aglianico del Taurasi. These wines are produced in renowned areas such as Irpinia, Avellino, Tufo and the Sannio, each bringing its own style and balance of alcohol and freshness.

Appellations and renowned winegrowers

The main appellations of Campania

The region is characterised by a strong volcanic influence, producing structured and lively wines. It boasts 5 prestigious DOCGs and 15 notable DOCs (editor’s note: Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita or otherwise): names that resonate, such as Taurasi DOCG, Greco di Tufo DOCG, Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Falerno del Massico DOC, as well as wines classified as IGT (editor’s note: Protected Geographical Indication) for more free-spirited and modern vintages.

Leading winegrowers

Iconic producers such as Terra di Lavoro have chosen to reclassify some of their wines as IGT, despite their commitment to quality and their solid reputation.

Domaine Montevetrano, founded by Silvia Imparato, has taken a similar approach. The estate has played a major role in raising the international profile of Campania’s wines, notably thanks to the support of the renowned American critic Robert Parker.

Among the flagship wines is Rampaniuci, produced in the Falerno del Massico appellation, a legendary terroir celebrated since ancient times.

Winemaking and the character of Campania’s wines

Terroirs and winemaking methods

The mineral-rich volcanic soils, combined with a Mediterranean climate, strongly influence the style of the wines. The winemaking process prioritises the expression of fruit, controlled alcohol levels and balance, resulting in authentic, food-friendly wines.

Food and wine pairings from Campania

Which Campania wine goes with which dish

A Taurasi rosso is the perfect accompaniment to roast meats and dishes served with sauce. Whites such as Greco or Fiano have a briny quality that enhances fish, seafood and refined Italian cuisine. There’s a wine for every occasion!
