Located at the foot of the Pyrenees, the Madiran appellation stretches across south-west facing hillsides, benefiting from generous sunshine and regular winds. The soils vary between clay, rounded pebbles and gravel, providing effective drainage and an ideal base for powerful wines. The climate, at the crossroads of oceanic and mountain influences, allows the Tannat, the region's emblematic grape variety, to ripen slowly.
Tannat dominates the vineyard and gives the wines a solid structure and characteristic depth. Its assertive tannins, now better controlled thanks to gentler vinification methods, are accompanied by aromas of black fruits, spices and sometimes chocolate notes. The general style is distinguished by its power, concentration and excellent ageing potential.
A typical Madiran develops aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, liquorice and pepper, followed by a dense texture on the palate. The tannins structure the whole and prolong the finish. Connoisseurs seek out this combination of richness and balance, the signature of a terroir with a strong character.
Hot vintages accentuate the roundness and generosity of Tannat, while cooler years highlight its tension and aromatic precision. The wine can be aged for ten to twenty years, or even longer for some ambitious vintages. At the table, Madiran is the ideal accompaniment to red meats, game, stews and mature cheeses. The diversity of producers allows you to discover a rich range of interpretations of this emblematic terroir of the South-West.
