Definition: Grand cru

Back

The term "grand cru" is official in three regions. This term can be confusing. In Burgundy and Chablis, grands crus are the finest wines produced in the best climates, followed by premiers crus. In Bordeaux, however, and particularly in Saint-Émilion, most good wines are grands crus classés, preceded by grands vins, which are the premiers grands crus classés. In Champagne, this designation applies to wines from 100% classified communes, for example, Aÿ and Bouzy.
