Cavesa le CAVE, le club des amateurs de vins exquis

Champagne Brut, Cristal, Louis Roederer (coffret individuel) - 2014

An initially faint but distinct hint of freshly cut green but ripe apple, of lemon. Subtle florality, a mere touch of freesia, hints at more nuance to come. More time in the glass reveals a sense of still briny oyster shell. The palate is like a summer breeze, caressing the palate with finest, creamiest foam – and again that saltiness that is utterly seductive and appetising. There is immense vertical richness in that creamy but svelte texture. Despite the generosity, the creaminess, there is nothing superfluous to obscure the wine’s essential and clear-cut luminosity. This is a model of sleekness, understatement and depth, an utterly compelling combination of briskness and emollience. Irresistible now but guaranteed to evolve. 99/100.- Anne Krebiehl MW. Antonio Galloni : 98/100 ; Jancis Robinson : 18.5+/20.

Viticulture

Founded in 1776 in Reims, Maison Louis Roederer has remained family-owned and independent, and is now run by Frédéric Rouzaud, the seventh generation of the family. Its 241-hectare vineyard, consisting exclusively of Grands and Premiers Crus, stretches across the Marne Valley, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, divided into 410 plots reflecting the diversity of the terroirs. The 2014 vintage comes from terroirs located in Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Ay, Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. The iconic Cristal cuvée, created in 1876 for the Tsar of Russia, is made from 45 lieux-dits spread over seven Grands Crus.

Oenology

The 2014 vintage experienced contrasting weather conditions: a dry spring, a scorching early summer, an autumnal July, and a return of sunshine in September, ensuring optimal ripeness. The vinification includes 32% oak ageing, and the champagne is dosed at 7 g/l.
