  • Provenance: Bordeaux
  • Appellation: Bordeaux
  • Domain: Pénin
  • Grape variety(ies): Merlot
  • On-call time: 5 years

A great success for the Carteyron family range, this 100% Merlot is above all 100% natural. By this we mean vinification and ageing without added sulphur. But there’s no dogmatism here, and above all a real concern for precision and fruit. The result is unmistakable! The nose is finely peppery and minty, followed by a soft, easy-drinking, relaxed and tactile palate. Pure delight!

Viticulture

Sandy soil adds finesse to the wine. The Château began this type of vinification in 2008 as a challenge, without dogmatism, but with the ambition of revealing all the fruit of the Merlot grape. Only the healthiest plots are blended.

Oenology

The wines are matured on their lees with regular stirring to prevent oxidation and develop texture on the palate. They are aged at low temperature and then filtered before bottling.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Country terrine • Fine charcuterie • Longeole with lentils.

Domain
In 1854, Louis Carteyron and his son Jacques bought a farm, whose production was divided between fruit and wine. But it was in 1964 that Hubert Carteyron, a descendant, began to market Château Penin directly in bottles. His son, Patrick, represents the fifth generation and took over in 1982 after having worked as an oenologist in various prestigious Gironde appellations. The fruit production disappeared in favour of the vineyard with a resolutely qualitative objective. Modernisation and expansion work followed, until the acquisition, in 2011, of Château La Fleur Penin, in St-Émilion Grand Cru. Today, this family estate, respectful of the environment and the health of the consumer, is regularly rewarded and noticed for the quality and consistency of its wines, true references of the immense Bordeaux Supérieur appellation. And not content with shining in reds, Mr. Carteyron has also made a speciality of rosés, which he masters like few others, whether it be the colourful and vinous Clairet or the subtle and refreshing Bordeaux rosé.
