Riesling, Clos Mathis, Ostertag - 2022

  • Provenance: Alsace
  • Appellation: Alsace
  • Domain: Ostertag
  • Grape variety(ies): Riesling
  • On-call time: 15 years
  • Alcohol degree: 13.5%
The Clos Mathis produces Rieslings with breed and ageing potential. The youth may seem austere as the elements of structure (acidity, mineral tannins) prevail, but with time the Clos Mathis reveals a dry and sappy Riesling in the straight line of the great Alsatian Rieslings.

Viticulture

Clos Mathis is owned by Hubert Mathis, the talented vineyard manager of the Domaine. This remarkable 60-acre vineyard, surrounded by a dry stone wall, is located in the village of Ribeauvillé in the direct extension of the GC Geisberg and Kirchberg on the path leading to the 3 châteaux. The geology is composed of granite and gneiss of low fertility. The south-east facing slope is very steep, which necessitates terraced vine cultivation while ensuring a sunny and warm microclimate. The heat is however tempered by cool winds due to the location at the end of the valley. This allows for slow ripening which preserves the acidity and finesse of the Riesling.

Oenology

Hubert Mathis redeveloped this vineyard inherited from his parents and initially delivered the grapes to a local wine merchant, until 1997 when, attracted by a common adventure around this beautiful place, he set out - with André Ostertag - to reawaken the soul of this old terroir, which was already highly esteemed in the Middle Ages during the time of the Lords of Ribeaupierre.
