Cheval des Andes 2022 opens with a ripe, intense nose, heralding a dense, energetic palate. The mouth impresses with its concentration and precise tannins, which are both spicy and elegantly tight. A fine structure of noble bitterness prolongs the finish and gives it momentum. A racy wine, built for ageing, which is already establishing itself as one of the estate's great vintages. Wine Advocate: 97/100; Colin Hay: 97/100; Antonio Galloni: 99/100; James Suckling: 98/100.In stock in our warehouses

Technique
Viticulture
Conceived in 1999, this approach to viticulture is highly unusual, combining two very different 'terroirs' - Las Compuertas in Lujan de Cuyo and Paraje Altamira in the Uco valley - with two grape varieties and a desire to create complexity from diversity. The estate is now turning to agro-ecology, as at Cheval Blanc. It has adopted the light bottle for the 2020 vintage. The wine is made from very old Malbec (1945) and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Oenology
The grapes were transported by refrigerated lorry to the bodega in 20 kg crates, then carefully selected by hand. In keeping with our philosophy, the work at the bodega is based on a respectful approach that takes into account the origin of each parcel, in line with the concept of "one parcel, one vat". For this vintage, 80% of the wine was matured in French oak barrels and 20% in triple Austrian, Slovenian and German oak. The wine was matured in 225-litre barrels (40%), 400-litre barrels (40%) and 2500-litre tuns (20%) for 15 months, with 50% new oak.
Suggestions for accompaniment
Enjoy after an hour in a carafe with grilled red meat (steak, entrecôte, roast beef).
