Mencia, Ministry of Clouds, McLaren Vale - 2021

A highly inspired interpretation of this Iberian grape variety under the Australian sun. The nose is vibrant: tart red berries (redcurrant, pomegranate), violet, white pepper, hints of black tea and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is the freshness that impresses: juicy fruit, a delicately spicy structure, fine, silky tannins, carried by beautiful natural acidity. The finish is bright, full of energy and finesse, with real drinkability. A modern, easy-drinking version of Mencia, full of charm and balance.

Viticulture

Ministry of Clouds was founded in 2012 by Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood, borne of a joint desire to craft wines with gastronomy in mind. The mencia is issued from vines in the westerly facing portion of "The Chase" vineyard atop the Onkaparinga Gorge. The soil consists of Pirramimma Sandstone and thinly laminated slatey siltstone. Vines are farmed with organic principles.

Oenology

Hand picked with a portion of the graped fermented without destemming, then cold soaked for 3 days. Fermented in open vats and then matured in old French oak vessels for 12 months.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Beef tataki with sesame seeds and mustard sprouts - Grilled octopus, white bean cream and smoked paprika - Roasted beetroot salad with feta cheese and pecans.
