Viticulture
Plateau of chestnut and red clays on asteriated limestone, terraces (to the east) and slopes (to the west) on fine, very chalky bluish clays. 61 hectares of old vines from massal selection. Les Tours de Laroque is a selection of vines 30 years old or less.
Oenology
Hand-picked to respect the different climates - harvested by terroir and maturity: Merlot on 25, 26, 27, 29 and 30 September, 3 and 4 October; Cabernet Franc on 4 October. Vinification by plot in small concrete and stainless steel vats. Gentle extraction by pumping over. Protective maceration for greater fleshiness and aromatic brightness. Reduced ageing on fine lees, partly in barrels and partly in vats. 1st racking after 3 to 4 months' ageing, the 2nd during the following winter, before bottling (25 and 26 June 2019).
Suggestions for accompaniment
Lamb skewers with cumin • Eggplant gratin • Country terrine.
Liquid geography
Royally situated on one of the highest points of Saint-Emilion, the limestone terroirs of Laroque produce some of the most luminous, floral and spicy wines with a fresh salinity. The property has been run for several vintages by the young David Suire, who made his name with his work at Château Larcis Ducasse. With Laroque, he has found a choice playground, as the vineyard is the largest and most diversified of all Saint-Emilion, with quite a geo-pedological mosaic: the terroirs are made up of a plateau of chestnut and red clays on asteriated limestone, terraces to the east and slopes to the west, on fine bluish clays with a lot of limestone.
