Gamay Vieille Vigne, Christophe Abbet - 2020

On the granite soils of Martigny and Fully, Christophe Abbet, the «Prince of Gamay», creates small masterpieces in homage to this underestimated grape variety. He has once again produced a benchmark wine, with a bewitching aroma of red fruit, dried flowers and thyme. Its delicate tannins are matched only by the frankness of its unforgettable Morello cherry flavour. A perfect wine.

Viticulture

This cuvée comes from an old virosed vine (planted in 1967) on granite soil. This means that the vines are affected by a disease and they produce only small bunches of grapes. Thus the ratio between the skin of the grape and the pulp is very high, much higher than on a classic Gamay. This is one of the explanations for the concentration of this wine!

Oenology

Traditional maceration for 3 weeks. Aged in vats. Vinification and bottling with little SO2.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Macaroni stuffed with mushrooms • Pâté en croûte.

Christophe Abbet is an unclassifiable winemaker and the enfant terrible of the Valais. On the terroirs of Martigny and Fully, he produces some of the most original wines of the region. In particular his sweet wines, incredible wines of time, which he makes in his small cellar in Martigny-Bourg. These wines are the peaks of the Valais in their category! Baroque wines, flirting with fruit or spice horizons according to the vintage.
