Fumin, Les Crêtes - 2019

It was Costantino Charrère’s father who, in the 1970s, was the first to take Fumin out of the blends to make a single-variety wine. Extremely late in the season, this variety gives strong coloured, structured reds with a characteristic smoky nose. Like this one, which stands out for its extra finesse, the hallmark of the Charrère daughters, who have taken over this famous estate.

Viticulture

Written evidence of the presence of Fumin in the Valley dates back to 1657. In 1879 it occupied nearly 30% of the vineyards in the Valley. By 1960 it had almost disappeared. It currently covers an area of 17 hectares. With a very late maturity of 3rd to 4th period, it deserves to be given the best exposure. Cuvée from the terroirs of La Tour and Les Crêtes on Aymavilles. Morainic and sandy soil, with a steep slope. Altitude of 650 m. Guyot pruning.

Oenology

Vinification in temperature-controlled vats. Alcoholic fermentation using selected yeasts. 12 months maturation in 300 litre barrels. 12 months of maturation in bottles before being sold.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Brasato and polenta with Fontine d’alpage • Veal shank gremolata.

Domain
The Domaine des Crêtes was founded in 1989 in Aymavilles by the charismatic Costantino Charrère, who is in a way the "father" of all the great Valle d'Aostan winegrowers. It is now run by his daughters, who represent the fifth generation of this family, which has always been involved in agricultural production in the most poly-cultural sense of the word. The vineyard covers 25 hectares along the Dora Baltea, which crosses the region like the Rhone in Valais, in the communes of St-Pierre, Aymavilles, Gressan, Sarre, Aosta and St-Christophe. It is unanimously the most (re-)known Valle d'Aostan domain in the world and we import it exclusively for Switzerland.
