2008 results Vinexpo Asia-Pacific

Vinexpo Asia-Pacific 2008 broke all records and strengthened its position as Asia's leading international wine and spirits trade fair.

Vinexpo Asia-Pacific, Asia's international wine and spirits exhibition, closes today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) after three successful days, exceeding all expectations in terms of visitor and exhibitor numbers.

The fifth edition of Vinexpo Asia-Pacific was inaugurated on Tuesday 27 May by Mr Henry Tang, Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Government, and Ms Anne-Marie Idrac, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, accompanied by Mr Frederik Ma, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, and Ms Dominique Hériard Dubreuil, President of Vinexpo Asia-Pacific.

Mr Henry Tang welcomed the return of Vinexpo Asia-Pacific to Hong Kong following the abolition of wine duties. He emphasised that Hong Kong was positioning itself as a strategic wine hub in one of the most dynamic areas of the sector.

At the close of the exhibition, attendance is estimated to have reached some 8,500 trade visitors, an increase of 24% compared to Vinexpo Asia-Pacific 2006. 41% of visitors came from Hong Kong and Macau, 59% from Asia-Pacific, mainly China, followed by Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore, representing importers, wholesalers, retailers, duty-free buyers and airlines, as well as sommeliers and restaurateurs.

Commenting on these record figures, Mr Robert Beynat, Managing Director of Vinexpo, said, "Vinexpo Asia-Pacific was a resounding success, both in terms of the quality of the trade visitors and the diversity and renown of the international exhibitors."

More than 340 journalists from Asian television, radio, press and magazines, as well as wine and spirits correspondents from Europe and the United States, covered the event.

Vinexpo Asia-Pacific 2008 welcomed 692 exhibitors from 32 countries, including China, Australia, the United States, Latin America, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Korea, Macedonia and Moldova.

In conjunction with the event, the intensive programme of more than 30 tastings, conferences and seminars at the "Vinexpo University" was well attended, reflecting the growing interest of Asians in wines and spirits.

Ms Dominique Hériard Dubreuil said, "All exhibitors were impressed by the progress made in two years in terms of knowledge and appreciation of wine and spirits. We are convinced that this will contribute to the development of the wine and spirits industry in the region by promoting consumption."

The next Vinexpo exhibition will be held in Bordeaux from Sunday 21 June to Thursday 25 June 2009.

This will be the fifteenth edition of Vinexpo, the world's leading wine and spirits trade fair.

Vinexpo is held every two years in Bordeaux, alternating with Vinexpo Overseas.
