It is the fourth largest wine-producing country in South America. 16,000 hectares produce 800,000 hectolitres of red, white, rosé, fortified and sparkling wines. The dark-coloured rosés are more similar to Spanish clarete than French rosé. The most common grape variety is Harriague, which appears to be none other than Tannat. Next come Vidiella, Cabernet, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Syrah. White wines are mainly Frutilla (50%), Sémillon and Pinot Blanc, as well as Chardonnay, Johannique-Riesling and Pedro Ximénez.
