A local grape variety from Chianti, it is mainly found in Tuscany, where it is sometimes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also found in the Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, Lazio and on the island of Elba. Its wine is dry, slightly tannic, with a typical violet bouquet, a slightly bitter finish and an intense ruby red colour.
