Definition: Leaf

A plant part of the vine that varies in shape, size and colour depending on the grape variety. Winegrowers use the expression "first leaf - second or third leaf" to specify the age of a young plantation. In France, grapes for producing AOC-certified wine are only eligible from the fourth leaf onwards.
