The first bottles, dating from the late18th century, were plain. Orders for the wealthiest customers were personalised by printing initials, an emblem or a number on the glass. The bottle was therefore identified by its owner rather than its contents. A few years later, the first labels simply named the bottled wine. Soon, all producers became aware of the advertising elements that could adorn the label. To avoid misleading claims, labels must contain strictly regulated information.
