Definition: gourmet

A person who knows how to distinguish and appreciate good food and wine. Originally, the word gourmet referred to an expert wine taster. In the 18th century, its meaning expanded to include gastronomy in general. In Paris, some experts retained the titles of courtier-juré-gourmet-piqueur de vin (sworn broker-gourmet-wine taster).
