In the past, grape pickers would pour their baskets of grapes into the crusher placed on the brante. Crushing the grapes at the vineyard meant that more crushed grapes could be transported than whole grapes. Considering that the basket, which was soaked in water before use (as one would waterproof a boat or goger (Vaudoisism) to make it watertight), weighed about fifteen kilos and held 45 litres, the basket carrier transported at least sixty kilos in the sloping vineyards.
