Definition: Flying winemaker

Back

This role of consultant originated in Australia (see Australian Wine Research Institute of Adelaide), where talented winemakers have time during the harvest period in the vineyards of the northern hemisphere to act as advisors. Wine consulting laboratories now exist almost everywhere. In this role as an advisor on winemaking methods, the famous Professor Emile Peynaud, professor of oenology at the University of Bordeaux, played a pioneering role from 1950 onwards. More recently, renowned oenology laboratories have been managing major vineyards around the world. This is the case with Helen Turley in Napa Valley (Marcassin Winery, California) and, even more so, Michel Rolland, consulting oenologist in Bordeaux (Château Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol), who supervises the vinification of renowned vineyards in California, Chile, Argentina, Spain, France and everywhere else in the world's vineyards where he is called upon.
