Belonging to the table wine category, local wines benefit from an indication of origin and are subject to strict regulations concerning yield, grape varieties and alcohol content. Some local wines offer very good value for money. There are three types of appellations: departmental, regional (several departments) and large regional. There are four of these: Jardin-de-France, Comtés-Rhodaniens, Pays-d'Oc and Comté-Tolosain. All vins de pays should be consumed young and chilled, with the exception of a few full-bodied reds that are worth keeping for a few years.
