In Switzerland, a vineyard must be completely surrounded by a fence. This guarantees the unique provenance of the vineyard.

Among the most renowned clos are those in Burgundy: Clos des Lembrays (Morey-St.-Denis Grand Cru), Clos de Tart (Morey St.-Denis Grand Cru), Clos de Vougeot (Grand Cru neighbouring Chambolle-Musigny), Clos du Roi (Aloxe-Corton Grand Cru),Clos Frantin (Corton Grand Cru), Clos Saint-Denis (Morey St.-Denis Grand Cru), and Clos de la Roche (Morey St.-Denis Grand Cru).
