The 2020 Pichon Baron is utterly breathtaking, and also one of the very best young vintages I have tasted here. An exotic mélange of red cherry, mint, rose petal and blood orange comes alive in the glass. More than anything, though, the Pichon-Baron possesses remarkable energy and vibrancy that builds to an intense, beautifully focused finish. Technique

Viticulture

The vineyard, located south of the commune of Pauillac, is 30 years old on average, planted at 9000 p/ha and produces an average of 45 hl/ha. The grapes are harvested by hand. The soil is composed of gravel from the quaternary era called Garonne gravel, the subsoil has iron concretions at great depth (alios).

Oenology

The grapes are 100% de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasts 20 to 30 days (15 days of fermentation between 28 and 32 OC). Aged in barrels for 15 to 18 months in 80% new barrels and 20% one year old barrels.
