Viticulture
Originally, in 1635, the château belonged to Jean de Moytié. At the time, the estate was traditionally named after its owner, becoming Mont-Moytié and later Léoville Poyferré. The vineyard comprises 4 parcels totalling 80 hectares. The soil is composed of glacial gravel resting on a limestone plateau. The average age of the vines is 25 years. Planting density is 9,000 vines/ha. The soil is worked and organic fertilisers are used.
Oenology
The grapes are harvested by hand. Vinification takes place on a parcel-by-parcel basis in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats over a three-week period. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels (50%). Léoville Poyferré is matured in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new, for 18 to 20 months.
