Armenia, Heritage Sireni, Zorah Wines - 2020

  • Provenance: Armenia
  • Appellation: Armenia
  • Domain: Zorah Wines
  • On-call time: 15 years
  • Alcohol degree: 13.5%
A new addition to the Heritage collection, this cuvée is a blend of sireni with ararati. The resulting wine reminded us a great deal of the very fine Syrahs (not to say Serines) from the northern Rhône Valley, more specifically Côte-Rôtie, with hints of violets and pepper. The palate is long, structured and fresh. For a first try, it's a master stroke!

Viticulture

Sireni is grown at altitudes of about 400 metres above sea level in sedimentary clay soils. The vineyards are grown without irrigation. In contrast, Ararati grapes are grown in the Vayotz Dzor highlands at altitudes of 1300 metres. Despite its high potential, this variety is in danger of extinction. The grapes are harvested from random rows of 30/40 year old vines.

Oenology

The two varieties are fermented separately in traditional Armenian karasses buried ¾ of the way into the ground. The Ararati is in contact with the skin. They are then blended and aged for about two years in a mixture of clay amphorae (karasses) and rough concrete tanks without epoxy lining. Another 12 months in the bottle.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Grilled tuna with ginger - Eggplant and tomato confit pie with Thai lemongrass - Veal tendrons with tarragon.

Liquid geography

Domain
We are in the cradle of world viticulture, not far from the Areni cave, where the oldest remains of viniculture (over 6,100 years old) were discovered. This is the Rind vineyard, with a cultivated area of 15 hectares. The sandy soils are rich in limestone. The vines are grown in Guyot and although the vines are young, it should be remembered that the selection was made from 80 year old plants! Because of the altitude and climate, the vines are not grafted and are therefore grown free-standing, at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare, with a low yield of 20 hl/ha. Fermentation takes place in large raw concrete vats. This is followed by maturation in amphorae of different sizes, with a short period at the end of the cycle in 31 hl tuns to soften the tannins.
