Definition: Vougeot AOC

Back
The fame of the eponymous vineyard (see Clos-Vougeot) somewhat overshadows the eponymous appellation. Region of Côte-de-Nuits in Burgundy. Production area located to the north near Nuits-Saint-Georges, more precisely within plots of land in the commune of Vougeot in the Côte-d'Or department. Classified as a communal AOC with four premiers crus in 1936. Area under production: nearly 18 hectares, including 3 hectares of white grapes. The appellation covers a total of 16.5 hectares, of which 11.7 hectares are classified as premier cru. White grape varieties: Chardonnay and Pinot Gris; Pinot Beurot; black grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Pinot Liébault. The incorporation of a certain number of white and grey grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot into the vineyards intended for producing red wines is still authorised, provided that they do not exceed 15%. Vinified as: white for a very small quantity and mainly as red. It can be kept for a very long time, from 5 to 15 years. Ideal serving temperature: between 8 and 10°C for white, between 16 and 17°C for red. Pair with: grilled or roasted red meat, pheasant with apples or Dauphinoise-style venison haunch.
