Definition: Voiturier

A person who transported wine by water or land. This service involved very specific and strict conditions, such as the regular topping up of barrels, for which the carrier received an additional barrel for every 20 to 24 barrels transported. Later, the term 'voiturage' was applied to the transport of wine by rail.
