Vin de pays français was a table wine, but its label included a reference to its geographical region of origin.
A vin de pays is a wine that corresponds to a French wine designation (not an appellation) created in 1968 with the aim of promoting the very significant production that was not covered by any appellation.
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status replaced the vin de pays label in 2009.
