Back A wooden, metal, reinforced concrete or plastic support, stuck into the ground and used to support the vine. This type of support varies in shape and size depending on the cultivation method. In goblet cultivation, the stake supports the shoots, which, once they are sufficiently developed, are gathered around the stake and tied with ties or rings. The shoots held in this way are less fragile in strong winds and the grapes benefit from better sunlight. A good quality stake must be strong and durable, especially at ground level. Wooden stakes are usually impregnated with a liquid to protect them from mould. Metal stakes are tarred or galvanised to protect them from rust. Local synonym: carrasson.
