Back This is the process by which chemicals and nutrients are transported within the plant. The products of assimilation (sugars, acids, various substances) are called metabolites. These are produced mainly in the leaves and are then transported (translocation) to different parts of the vine where they will be used or stored. Translocation rates are less sensitive to microclimate than other processes, but it is clear that shaded shoots import sugars in order to obtain the energy necessary for their growth.
