Definition: timbale

Originally, this word referred to a small, round container, usually made of silver or gold, which was mainly used for drinks. Later, it came to refer to a dish, a kind of terracotta or metal bowl intended for two diners. Today, it is also a hot starter served with a sauce-based filling. The filling is usually made from meat (calf's or lamb's sweetbreads), poultry, fish or seafood.
