Chloroanisoles (including 2,4,6 TCA) are thought to be formed from methyl chlorophenols by microorganisms. The conversion to chloroanisoles is thought to be a means of detoxification and elimination of chlorine or certain chlorinated compounds that are harmful to certain microorganisms. TCAs are responsible for cork taint.
