Definition: Single quinta port

Back
(Pronounced: singl kinta) Vintage port produced exclusively from a single estate. The famous quintas are owned by the major port houses (Quinta da Vargellas belongs to Taylor's, Quinta dos Malvedos to Graham's, etc.). Single quintas are vinified in exactly the same way as vintage ports, matured for 2 to 3 years in casks, then bottled without filtration. Decanting is essential before serving. As a general rule, houses market their single quinta ports using the harvest from a good year that is not officially declared a vintage. These ports are often stored by producers until they are considered to have reached full maturity, perhaps 8 to 10 years after harvest. This type of port is particularly suitable for customers who do not have a good cellar or who do not wish to store bottles.
