Definition: Selection of noble grapes (SGN)

This specific designation complements the Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru appellations for Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat grape varieties when they meet particularly strict production conditions, particularly with regard to the natural sugar content of the grapes. The exceptional concentration required by the regulations (256 grams per litre for Riesling and Muscat, 279 g for Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris) is obtained by over-ripening the grapes and developing noble rot, which requires particularly careful successive harvesting.
