Definition: Sand

Back
Loose sedimentary rock, often composed of quartz grains, formed by the erosion of more compact sandstone, granite, etc. Sand retains water and nutrients less easily, unless it rests on a layer of clay, which is favourable for vine cultivation. On the other hand, sandy soils protect viticulture from phylloxera.
