Definition: Quarts-de-Chaume

Back
An appellation forming a small enclave in the Coteaux du Layon in the Loire region, which produces exclusively in the best vintages a late harvest wine made from botrytised Chenin Blanc grapes. These wines have exceptional longevity and are the most prestigious in the Loire Valley. The name dates back to the Middle Ages, when the local lords reserved a quarter of the grape harvest from the best vineyards in La Chaume for themselves.
