Pyroclastic rock with a limestone or marly matrix containing brownish granules of basaltic glass resembling peppercorns (hence their name), generally less than 1 cm in size, accompanied by small blocks of fresh lava and a few fragments of sedimentary rock. Rock formed from a mixture of pure lava and sedimentary rock (usually marl).
